Vineyard walks in the Rebland: the loveliest trails around Steinbach

The Baden-Baden Rebland is both wine and walking country: gentle hills full of vines, wide views over the Rhine plain to the Vosges and cosy wine taverns along the way. From our apartments in Steinbach you set off practically straight into the vineyards.

Why the Rebland is so lovely for walking

Around Steinbach, Varnhalt and Neuweier, vineyards line the slopes at the edge of the Black Forest. Riesling and Pinot Noir grow here above all – the Rebland belongs to the Baden wine region. Well-signposted paths wind between the rows of vines with ever-changing views, whether for a quick hour or an extended day tour.

The best part: there's no need to drive anywhere first. From the apartment it's just a few minutes' walk until you're right among the vines.

Routes for every level

For a relaxed stroll, follow the paths through the vines around Steinbach and Varnhalt. If you want more, hike up to the Yburg castle ruin with its lookout tower – the Rebland classic – or link several wine villages along the Rebland ridge trail. You'll find an overview with maps and difficulty levels on the official hiking page.

Tip: plan your route so there's a place to stop along the way – it turns the walk into a treat.

Where to stop along the way

Numerous wine taverns and restaurants invite you to pause along the vineyards: the castle restaurant on the Yburg with its wide view, the hidden Klosterschänke, the Röderswald, the Weinerei at the Nägelsförst estate or Schloss Neuweier. You'll find a detailed list with addresses and distances on our restaurants page.

Best season & practical tips

Early autumn (September/October) is especially atmospheric, when the leaves turn and the harvest begins – but spring with its fresh greenery is wonderful too. Bring sturdy shoes, enough water and sun protection; the slopes are often open and sunny. Many paths are partly steep, but you're richly rewarded with the views.
